These ratings equate to how long a structure can contain a fire, limiting its spread and providing valuable time for evacuation, fire suppression, or rescue.

What Is a Fire Resistance Rating?

A fire resistance rating is assigned to materials or assemblies that meet specific criteria during a fire test.

The most common test for this is ASTM E119, a standard used to measure how long a wall or floor/ceiling assembly can resist the spread of fire and heat. To pass this test, the assembly must contain the fire and maintain its structural integrity over the specified time period.

For example, a structural wall assembly with a 2-hour fire resistance rating means that under test conditions, the wall can prevent the spread of fire through the wall and maintain its load-bearing capability for at least two hours. The most common timeframe for a test like this is one hour, but this timed measurement will be factored into the fire resistance rating.   

Understanding Fire Protection

Unlike fire resistance, fire protection is about safeguarding materials and components from the damaging effects of fire. 

Fire protection ensures that materials can maintain their functionality when exposed to fire. This includes methods like fireproof coatings, insulation, or barriers designed to prevent deterioration of the protected materials.

Since fire protection is used to preserve the integrity of structural elements, different applications can help bolster protection against heat, smoke, and fires.

For instance, fireproof coatings are applied to steel beams to prevent them from reaching a critical temperature at which they might collapse. Similarly, fire-protective insulation can help prevent electrical cables from overheating and causing issues.

When it comes to fire protection ratings, fire stopping plays a key role. Fire stopping refers to the materials and methods used to seal openings in fire-resistance rated assemblies, such as where pipes, ducts, or cables pass through walls or floors. While the assembly itself may have a high fire resistance rating, penetrations made by pipes or cables can create vulnerabilities.

ASTM E814 is a standard testing method used to measure the effectiveness of fire stopping materials. These materials ensure that once penetrations are made, the assembly can still prevent the spread of fire, preserving its fire resistance capabilities.

Key Differences Between Fire Resistance Rating vs Fire Protection Rating

The primary difference between fire resistance and fire protection lies in their focus. Fire resistance is about how long a structure can withstand fire before failing — while fire protection is about preserving the functionality of materials or systems despite fire exposure. 

In other words, fire resistance looks at containment, while fire protection ensures that critical components, such as structural supports or electrical systems, remain operational during a fire.

Another key difference between fire protection ratings and fire resistance ratings is their individual use cases. For example, fire resistance ratings are crucial for structural assemblies such as walls, floors, and doors that need to contain a fire for a specific amount of time, allowing occupants to escape and fire fighting personnel to arrive.

Fire protection ratings are fundamental to resisting the effects of fire in order to maintain the fire resistance ratings of those structural assemblies.

Why Both Fire Resistance and Fire Protection Matter

Fire resistance and fire protection work hand-in-hand to provide comprehensive fire safety. Together, these fire safety approaches help prevent both the spread of fire and the failure of critical systems that could lead to collapse or other hazards.

Similarly, both fire resistance and fire protection are crucial for meeting building code requirements. Many codes require buildings to have fire-rated assemblies and fire-protected materials to enhance the safety of occupants and reduce the risk of fire-related damage. Fire testing standards like ASTM E119 and ASTM E814 help ensure that materials meet these important guidelines.
